How Counseling Can Help People Overcome Depression
Depression is a discontented or sad mood that can leave a person feeling hopeless, unmotivated, lethargic, and in some extreme cases, can even lead to suicide. A recent study has shown that more than 70% of the world population is suffering from one form of depression or another. Unfortunately, only 30% of them are undertaking counseling. Left untreated, chronic depression can lead to very serious health conditions. That is why people who are suffering from depression should seek professional help.
Sources of depression
There are many factors that can inflict depression into a person. Health problems, relocation, financial instability, job loss, divorce, or separation are all common sources of depression. A depressive episode can also occur due to everyday stress, such as domestic violence, social insulation, work-related problem, etc.
Symptoms
It is very important to make a distinction between grief and depression. Although they may both cause the same human reactions, the latter lasts only for a limited period of time and is a quite normal process. Depression, on the other hand, can last a lifetime (if not treated with counseling). The symptoms of depression vary from one individual to another. It is very hard to put a pin on how depression affects people in general or what the symptoms are exactly. However, in most cases, depression is associated with fear, shame, and anger. These emotions can also manifest in the body, in the forms of nausea, pain, aches, etc.
Treatment
Depression is one of the most common reasons people seek therapy. The good news is that this chronic disease is highly treatable. The bad news is that depression itself can stop individuals from seeking help. A depressed individual must first admit that he/she has a problem that can be treated only through professional counseling before they can make the decision to see a therapist.
