Do You Need to Talk to Someone Because of Abuse?

What Exactly Does a Counselor Do?

The word counselor can have several connotations, however, it used to describe an individual that is a therapist, this too has different meanings, it could mean a licensed social worker, a marriage or family therapist, a psychologist or even a psychiatrist that has regular therapy sessions. The word can also describe lawyers that advocate for others in a court of law or offer legal advice, a person that works for a consul, a person that works at a children’s camp or school that provides academic advice.

The phrase counsel means to offer guidance”, there are numerous different definitions of counsel, that could include anything ranging from to convince or to advise. These definitions do explain in a way the various things someone that has this job title does.

In the traditional definition of a counselor that acts as a therapist, a person will help to address issues dealing with emotional or mental health problems. This person very rarely gives advice and never tries to convince their client to do something. However, they will act as a guide, due to the fact most therapists believe a patient should be the one that reaches self-realization. After all, most advice will be ignored, or clients are not yet ready to hear what their problem really is. Instead, a therapist will help their client come to their own conclusions regarding problems or issues they are suffering from.

This is not, however, true with every therapist, some are more willing to give advice than others are. Often, a therapist will urge something, like when their patient is living in a dangerous situation, or when their patient reveals they are a danger to themselves or others. Licensed therapists are empowered in some regions to report patients that are suicidal or are being abused or abusing someone else.
